Would a teacher really be able to date a student if the student attended a different school?
October 18th, 2009 | by admin |So let’s say a teacher dates a student that would be the same age as their own students (the age of consent) but the student attends a different school.
Would it be against the code of ethics?
Also, what would happen if this student was a former student of theirs but currently is not?
This came up because I was reading a question about some girl thinking her teacher liked her.

Or (for the dumb ass above me) a student could be in college in this case, since the the person asking the question doesn’t specify, and states that the student is the age of consent. .

It wouldn’t be illegal as long as they are of legal age, but I would seriously question the judgement of any teacher who dated someone of student age (in high school). Ethically a bit dicey.

It wouldn’t be illegal.
However, they could have their licence taken away. The Teachers act (at least where I am) includes things such as
“… shall be deemed to include sexual abuse of a student by a member.”
It does not say your student. However it does get technical and people could prove a case against it.
My highschool I went to was relatively new and they had a bunch of young teachers – so we were only 5 years apart really. Anyways, one of the students ended up marrying one of the teachers (they were together 7 years before tying the knot). So it does happen.

Teachers are allowed to date students from other schools, just as long as they’re over the age of consent. They can also date their former students, again, as long as they’re over the age of consent & no longer at the school that the teacher teaches at. However, if the teacher in question is married, then it doesn’t matter how old the student/former student is, that’s wrong.

a teacher may not date a student and anyone not an adult would be a problem. It doesn’t matter that a student is at another school – turkey still could not date the student as unethical.
Once a student is out of school, and of legal age would be okay. However right after graduation it would look bad and the teacher might be fighting for their job. Might have to show were not involved before. Larger districts would be a bit easier but small rural districts tend to be very strict. Might win legally but could make life miserable.
A graduate of another school who is of legal age would be more acceptable.
