Dogs hair loss……..?

My dog is a 12 year old springer spaniel. She had got spayed (means she wont have puppy’s) and as long as i can remember she has had big patches of, well just skin. We took her to the vets ages ago and they gave us some shampoo to use on her which didn’t work. So we left it but she seems to be losing even more hair since we are finding bits of fur around the house. Her hair on her body is thin and we think that one day she might go completely bold! Does anyone know what this is or what we can do? Please help.
